Daniel Bucknam Hawkes lived in Minot, Me., and in 1824, married Mary Chandler Gower. Mary died in 1837 leaving Daniel with four young children. As a tanner by trade, Daniel traveled often and therefore relied on family members to raise his children. His daughter, Mary Louise Hawkes (whose transcription of her diary is found in this collection) was given to her cousin, Dr. Horace A.
